« Back to Our History

Starting with a clear vision of what foodservice distribution should be, and after having been in the industry for several years, Mr. Richard Auger, together with a group of friends, acquired in 1987 a small family owned company located in Charlevoix. Motivated by his vision of foodservice, Mr. Auger managed to convince three other distributors to merge their companies, and on July 4, 1988, Distal officially opened its doors to the foodservice industry.

Between 1988 and 1995, the company acquired four more distributors, all strategically located and bringing along a strong and specific expertise, which allowed Distal to grow its product lines for the benefit of its constantly growing clientele.

At the time of the acquisitions and mergers, most of the staff along with the shareholders Remained in place, and have, throughout the years, helped to create a company whose sense of sharing, honesty and respect has earned it an important place in the food service industry.

In January 1996, Distal would merge with Gordon Food Service from Grand Rapids, Michigan. This would not only double its business to make it the second largest foodservice distributor in the Province of Quebec. However, above all, Distal would be joining a company whose long-standing values of sharing and commitment to integrity mirrored those of its own. Like GFS Distal is also very proud of its foundation created in 1994, whose primary goal is to give support to children afflicted with illnesses and to those that are poverty stricken.

Since then, and with many thanks to its investors and the ongoing efforts of its employees, has reached the distal pole and become the number one foodservice distributor in the Province of Quebec.

In 2009, to strengthen our corporate image and present a cohesive message to our customers across Canada, we changed our name to Gordon Food Service.
